Duane was one of 8 children of Charles and Mertie Kammerdiner. He graduated from East Waterloo High School, married Mary Belle Haynes on his birthday in 1946, and raised 4 children, Betty, Jerry, Diane, and Richard. He retired from John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works after 35 years as an electo-plater.
